I've just looked at a book on Brunel and the GWR. When broad gauge was scrapped the conversion left space to lay a third line in many places so it enabled a cheaper option to double and quadruple track in some places as cuttings and bridges only needed shorter extensions in many places. Some exceptions were the Wharncliffe viaduct in Hanwell which has a duplicated viaduct but is to standard gauge width. This can be seen clearly if one stands under it. You can see the join |
