Look chum you started off this thread with your abusive and uncalled-for comment about 'noisy' tram opponents, so don't be such a sanctimonious hypocrite. While Livingstone certainly did pursue, with some success, a policy of improvement to bus service frequency and network coverage, the real 'thanks' for London's level of public transport provision is due to its exemption from the deregulated commercial free-for-all imposed on the rest of the country; and the fact that London gets huge subsidies not enjoyed by the rest of the country, to back up its regulated public transport system. Livingstone also squandered many millions of pounds relentlessly pursuing crackpot projects like the Uxbridge Road tram scheme - money that could and should have been spent on getting the basics right on the existing public transport network; starting with comprehensive provision of shelter, seating and real-time bus arrival displays at bus stops. Instead we're now seeing billions of pounds squandered on the Xrail extravagance which will benefit only a small proportion of the travelling public here and will ensure we can whistle for any significant improvement to more basic public transport on Uxbridge Road or anywhere else. |
