Don't really want to get stuck back into this thread again - life's several orders of magnitude too short - but have to point out the original 'Brunel' (7 ft) track gauge did not leave enough extra space for even one extra track, just a bit more space between the tracks when eventually converted to the Stephenson 'standard' (4ft 8.5in) gauge in the 1890s. And the train stock is essentially the same width as on the rest of the national network. So the original broad gauge on this line (at least on the two original tracks - not sure when the other two tracks were built and whether they were to the same width stabndards) has nothing whatever to do with capacity on this line, which is exactly the same as for any other comparable 4-track line on the national rail network. |
