I have to say I'm a newbie to this forum stuff but it's informative and has been most useful these last few days. But Mikes stuff on here is as knowledgeable as anything I've read on this issue. As someone who was employed to push this through, I always found myself at odds with the job in hand. It was and still is an expensive method with little chance of feasibilty balanced against the damage carved thrugh not one but several communities. It failed completely to solve the north-south flow of people, let alone traffic. Worst of all it became a political instrument and that was partly due to to many people in TfL and vested interest groups being policical rather than practical. In reality it should have been ditched and the trolleybus proposal looked at in practical terms. It woudl still be a better bet. But even these are better as a local network than a one line route. The real long term solution would be a tube line from EB to UX. 10 miles. The construction is far less complex than in central London as is the geology. The cost is huge but compared to the Tram and the huge amounts of commerce that would suffer along with trees and premium space, not as huge as one would expect. |
