Ken Livingstone loved the idea of spending barrowloads of public funds which we could ill afford. Some £40,000,000 was paid to consultants to come up with a workable plan and they failed. The consultant hadn't a clue about local geography. The tram scheme was going to cost £650,000,000 (that's £50 notes piled as high as Ben Nevis..4406 feet) just to create it! Lardens Road and Bollo Bridge Road were to become the main east-west throroughfare for traffic. There would be no room in The Vale or Acton High Street for passing traffic...and should a tram be involved in an accident or break down..the Police would rub their hands at being able to close the road for hours. Great distance between tram stops meant that 70 year shoppers like me and you would have further to walk. Trolleybuses were deemed the way forward..and Ken's plan was quite rightly kicked into touch...and it didn't cost him a penny. |
