Sooner or later existing diesel buses will have to be replaced. Trolleybuses will happily intermix with whatever bus initiatives have been adopted such bus shelters, information signage, bus lanes and kassel kerbs for level boarding. Fares collected presumably reflect the need to "save up" to purchase new vehicles which should be trolleybuses. The overhead wiring installation would be funded by the electricity supply authority against a long tenure of supply. The main advantage would be an improvement in air quality, no dependence on dwindling oil supplies and a buffer against continuing rise in the cost of oil. The tram nutters look for vast sums of money to fund the required infrastructure and acquire exclusive use of much of limited road space available. New tram schemes inflict years of misery during their construction period and when built seldom operate as part of an integrated transport policy. An attractive public transport facility will influence model shift which isn't the sole preserve of vehicles that have steel wheels. The superior acceleration of trolleybuses could actually reduce the number of vehicles required for a route thus reducing congestion and if their silent operation worries you too much, the vehicles could be fitted with a noise generator. |
