Keith, Yes, I'm sorry about the offensive language that Chris Veasey has directed at you on this thread but that's the type of people we are dealing with. You were right to start the thread, though - because by doing so you have highlighted the inadequacies of Ealing's current public transport infrastructure (and rightly annoyed the car lobby in the process). Let's end on a happy note: there was a group of NIMBYs down in Croydon called "Tram Stop". They were rather like "Save Ealings Streets" in that they wanted to safeguard what they perceived to be the short-term interests of car drivers by derailing a proposed improvement to public transport in South London. Well, on this occasion, the NIMBYs failed - and the tram went ahead. Now "Tram Stop" are actually campaigning for the tramline's extention! It shows what can be achieved with the necessary political will. (By the way, some people will now try to misrepresent the Croydon Tram scheme by saying it all operates on disused railway lines away from built up areas. Don't believe them - go down there and try travelling on the route from Wimbledon to Beckenham Junction and you'll discover that for much of the journey it operates in packed, built-up commercial areas -- including some quite narrow streets). |
