The Great Western Line is almost at capacity and has already been resignalled for 90mph running on the relief and local lines. Crossrail will see that capacity to it's maximum. The relief capacity between Southall and Paddington also contains diagrams for freight and HST intercity services as well as semi fast and stopping locals. For any more the line would need two more tracks . We are fortunate that the line was built by Brunel as a Broad gauge line which left a lot of extra space when made standard gauge but some 100 years later this space is now full. This is why some former Paddington services now run out of Marylebone |
