Nothing odd about it sunshine - I use public transport on those rare occasions when it's the best or only serious option for my journey. If you think anybody would or should use public transport under any other circumstances you're the one with the odd ideas - transport, public or private, is a utility not a religion - or should be. Perhaps that's the root of the problem - that those responsible for providing for improving public transport share your rather eccentric outlook and really don't understand - or care - how it affects the ordinary punter. The plain fact is that for most of the journeys I have to make public transport takes far longer, is far more unpredictable and unreliable, is far more uncomfortable and strenuous, and is often a downright humiliating experience - particularly as it's all too obvious in all sorts of ways that the providers couldn't give a toss about the way their 'service' treats punters. The fact that I'm now old enough to have got my twirly card for free travel (outside Mon-Fri AM peak hours) makes no difrterence whatever to my modal choice - for most journeys at most times the time, uncertainty, discomfort and frustration of public transport travel far outweighs the marginal cost of using the car. If transport planners, managers and politicians can't or won't understand those hard facts of real life for most of us who have the choice, then there's really no hope of getting the present unsatisfactory situation put right. This professional transport consultant certainly does understand them. |
