Regarding Chris's comments on CrossRail's money being better spent elsewhere; I tend to agree. Most of the benefit to western and west of London could be achieved by the closure of Paddington mainline station and diverting Western region trains in to Euston via the tracks, suitably improved, from just east of Acton Main Line to Willesden Junction/Kensal Green. Modern signalling and train operating techniques could adequately deal with potential congestion on the approach to Euston. Paddington was always a cludge location; Brunel wanted God's Wonderful Railway to terminate at Vauxhall. Possible Underground improvements could be making the Bank loop of the Northern Line into a shuttle service and relocating Euston Square station. |
