It's neither 'absolutely vital' nor 'thoroughly merited' except in the view of the bankers and other financial 'services' scum the easing of whose journeys between their officers and Heathrow is and always has been the only real motivation for the scheme. Xrail will be of no use to me, my household nor most others in west London let alone further afield, and both the crippling cost and the operational constraints it will impose on other services will permanently stymie many more socially useful transport improvements. As a Northerner I'd much rather see far more badly-needed and much longer-deferred (and much shorter) cross-city heavy rail links for the likes of Bradford, Manchester and Glasgow, at a combined cost a fraction of London Xrail. As a (reluctant) long-time west London resident I'd much rather see a whole host of more modest and less extravagant schemes such as:- - Proper interchanges (and where possible through services) between west London's radial rail services and the North and West London orbital rail lines (currently effectively inaccessible from most of this borough) - Many more frequent through bus services linking (for example) South Ealing/ Northfields and Ealing and Hammersmith Hospitals; and proper inter-service interchange facilities where through services are not possible - Electrification of the busier bus services (ie as a minimum, all which justify use of double-deck or bendi-buses) in the form of modern trolleybus routes - Such BASIC passenger amenities (currently lacking) as passenger shelters, seating and real-time service arrival tinme displays at bus stops in South Ealing and many other places in west London. |
