Tony, I know that we all like to grumble about the council but you really don’t need to bother with Freedom of Information requests to find out most things you want to know about the council. Often simply typing a few words in the search box on the council’s website will find what you want. Most important decisions are made by the cabinet so keep an eye on the cabinet agenda: http://www2.ealing.gov.uk/services/council/committees/agendas_minutes_reports/cabinet/24may2011-15may2012.html At its meeting of 26th July the cabinet agreed the new environmental services contract which saved about £3.5 million from the original £20 million combined contracts for waste and grounds maintenance. This report was pretty extensive and mentioned that the plastics service would change. Strangely it did not mention the garden waste change although officers and the cabinet must have known that this change was in the pipeline and implied from the way the new contract was set up. The Award of Environmental Services Contract 2012 report is here: http://www2.ealing.gov.uk/ealing3/export/sites/ealingweb/services/council/committees/agendas_minutes_reports/cabinet/24may2011-15may2012/_26_july_2011/Item_14_-_Award_of_Environmental_Services_Contract_2012.doc At its meeting on 13th September the garden waste decision was made: http://www2.ealing.gov.uk/ealing3/export/sites/ealingweb/services/council/committees/agendas_minutes_reports/cabinet/24may2011-15may2012/_13_September_2011/Item_12_-_Environmental_Services_Contract_-_Future_Options.doc This report details the £1.1 million “saving” that will be made by charging people £40 per household. Up front costs of £880K to set up the service are also detailed. Mahfouz's list of alternative savings is hysterical nonsense. He doesn't mention that the value of the difference between standard terms and conditions of employment enjoyed by the private sector and those offered by the council to its staff is about £30 million. I could go on but there are a number of ways to make substantial savings that the Ealing Labour group simply don't like, such as sharing services more extensively with other boroughs, instead they are happier making unnecessary cuts to frontline services to remind ordinary people how evil the Tories are. |
