Withdrawal of the orange bags won't affect me much. But I really, really object to the manner of this covert increase in taxation because it encourages a divisive, self-centred perspective. That is the exact opposite of the civic cohesion and community that councils exist to facilitate. There is no end to the pernicious logic of "I don't personally get any benefit so why should I pay". EG I'm healthy so why should I pay for healthcare of those who aren't, EG I don't use libraries much so why should I pay for them. EG I'm not a pensioner or disabled or a child at risk, so why should I pay? Be careful what you wish for. |
