Carol, during the previous Labour administration residents had to pay 50 pence for a degradable pink bag in order to have their garden waste collected. These were available through libraries and council offices. The trouble with these bags was that if you didn't use them soon enough, they would disintegrate - waste of your money! In order to encourage more people to recycle more the conservatives introduced free collection of garden waste, plastic, styropac, as well as household and school food collection - thus, thanks to the efforts of residents, the recycling rate on all waste collected went up from 19% in 2006 to 40% in 2011. These were targets that were set and reached year after year. Unfortunately, we still do not know the recycling target that the now Labour administration has set to achieve for this year or by the end of this administration in 2014. Why are they refusing to tell us this? |
