Is this what local politics has become? Two bald men fighting over a comb. Here's a suggestion for councillors : deal with the issue as it affects the people you allegedly serve, not who did or didn't say what to whom. So : what research has the council done to assess the outcome of the proposed changes to green waste collection? What is the anticipated revenue? What are the increased costs due to garden waste being covertly added to general waste, fly tipping etc. Can we have an analysis that relates the £40 charge to collection and disposal costs? Do you anticipate a surplus? Can we have an explanation of why a service funded out of council tax has disingenuously been presented as hitherto "free" and hence now chargeable? Why should residents not perceive this as simply a covert council tax increase? I am slightly surprised green waste recycling is uneconomic. I recently had work done by a tree surgeon. He was keen to take away 4 tons of tree as he sells the chippings. But perhaps I shouldn't be. LBE charges for disposal of soil and rubble are uncompetitive with commercial services such as Hippobag, who claim to recycle most of what they collect. Hippo costs about £75/tonne collected. For >6bags LBE classify the material as unrecyclable and charge £155/tonne taken to Greenford tip. Finally, should we now expect other aspects of recycling to be deemed to have been "free", and subjected to charges for collection of glass, metal, paper and plastics? |
