Actually it is not the case. The law is unchanged from when several types of vehicle needed to stop to recharge brake pressure and gearbox pressure which can often be lost during heavy stop start traffic. It still applies as these sorts of vehicles are still licensed to use British Roads. I know this because I have a 1946 Riley in the family which I still get to take out on occasion. It has an air pressure pre selective gearbox and sometimes it requires me to stop and run the engine to top up the pressure. Which can take up to 5 mins usually though, about 45 seconds. I have stopped not to park but for a safety operation to take place. This is rare for a car now but many buses have a similar set up and older buses many of which are privately owned but still road legal have a stop flag when brake or gear pressure drops low. Likewise the correct procedure is to stop in situ not park. When parking meters were first deployed you were only parked once you had left the vehicle and it was disabled and secured.i.e Brake on, and locked. There is also a distinction between No Parking and No Waiting which also require different traffic orders. |
