"Great to see British companies like Sky and British Gas championing Cycling and Swimming from a grass roots level to the top flight" Up to a point. Sky, of course, is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns the Sunday Times, which quite apart from employing Jeremy Clarkson, has past form for climate change denial and other things that make one not inclined to thank them for putting a trifling amount of money and effort into a public event in return for lashings of publicity - the event was formerly known as 'London Freewheel', of course, but changed to promote the profile of both the Mayor and Sky. I'm not entirely happy with that. Idea: good - corporate whoring of London's public life: bad. Promoting cycling is about more than just one event, and I'm not entirely convinced by the greenwash from companies whose back history is not good reading from an environmental point of view. |
