I agee with the first culprit...Serco and the Ealing officers who manage this contract. The second statement is just plain wrong as stated earlier. A bad workman blames the tools. MS software is reliable, if it is configured correctly. Just because it comes with a simple GUI for setup and any tom dick or harry can install it, does not make them an expert. Properly installed - its OK. A USB stick can easily be prevented from being used by setting appropriate system policies. Very easy to do with current Microsoft software if you know what you are doing. The cost for supporting an Open Source desktop / server environment in Ealing would easily outweigh the cost of this stupid outage. I am suprised by the alleged cost of the outage - £1.1m in direct costs for fixing this appears completely excessive. I would ask if this was a cost paid to Serco to resolve a problem that they should have prevented in the first place. A systematic review of the Disaster Recovery procedures should be conducted to verify that the backups are being completed correctly and that staff are familiar with the processes. |
