Much of the rest of the world has dumped Microsoft. Places like China and India do not care about the cost of their operating systems and software, they do not pay anyway, but I was told by a friend who travels to China as a buyer for a local importing and distributing company that they are all using free open source software. I have tried to persuade Ealing Council to help to organize courses for beginners and/or a community based club to help people learn how to set up their own networks and computers, but their IT people are totally clueless. They are absolutely petrified about the thought of allowing any secure system to connect to their beloved Microsoft, yet they are happy to allow their systems to access the Internet. The whole of the Internet infrastructure is based on Unix compatible systems, mainly running on Free Open Source Software. There are plenty of University level courses, but there is very little help for new users, who are just expected to read the documentation and dive in. |
