Free Open Source Software = No formal supplier support - which for a large organisation is a huge downside and risk. There are a lot more M$ skilled staff out there than those capable of supporting/running Unix type OS's - this is the unfortunate reality of corporate IT these days. Most large organisations DO run Microsoft for a large preportion of their systems - along with other operating systems from Sun, HP etc. It is perfectly possible to run these without significant downtime. All OS's are vulnerable and flawed in some way - so you need to plan for this and have multiple methods of mitigating this. Planning for failures is critical to ensuring good availability. This appears to have been less than adequate in this instance. So - lets get off the "The fault is using Microsoft poor software" and focus on the real issue - the lack of proper controls in place to prevent the system failure in the first place. For the record - I am not against Open source - I use this often myself and recognise the benefits of this, but I also know the downsides and this is why I am sure the decision for most risk adverse corporates is to use fully supported operating systems and software and not open source. Please focus on the real problem and not the sideshow. |
