| The government has changed tack over these schemes. They were introduced as an experimental and temporary response to Covid, but now the presumption seems to be that they must be kept. The previous Ealing Labour leader was very keen on this type of initiative so he was happy to take the Tory money. 'Greeks bearing gifts', as it's turned out. I suspect the new Labour leader has sensed that reaction against these schemes might cause problems in the upcoming local elections and wants to wind them down for now and possibly reintroduce them in a revised form later.. Hence the new emphasis on providing cycle routes and school street closures rather than wholesale 'neighbourhood' road closures. |
