Cllr Mahfouz, his fellow Cabinet members and Cllr Bell, keep coming up with the figure of £85M saving/cuts. Yet, at a Cabinet meeting, when confronted with the fact that their figures did not add up, they had to admit that the true figure should be just over £50M, the other £30M+ are needed in order for them to finance their own ‘pet’ schemes. But let’s get back to recycling. When Cllr Mahfouz was in opposition, he kept criticising the previous administration for setting a too low recycling target and challenging it to set the unrealistic target of 50%. Now that he is the portfolio holder, does he really think that the changes that he is going to propose are going to push recycling rates to the 50% target he was calling for then? By the way, I cannot find in any reports what target has been set for recycling rates this council year. Cllr Mahfouz, could you please enlighten us on this? I don’t believe any of us is opposed to change di per se, when changes offer the opportunity to improve and/or facilitate services or increase public participation. But I cannot see how these changes are going to benefit Ealing’s residents in the long run. In fact, the opposite will happen as residents will recycle less and less as they feel that their elected representatives are disengaging and ignoring them. |
