Michael, I have never ever heard this Council talk about the poor subsidising the rich when it comes to waste collection. This was my thought. However, I can think of the present Government getting the poor to subsidise the rich as they are already discussing lowering the tax levy that the most wealthy pay by 2 or 3%. Would they like to discuss lowering the amount of tax that a basic rate taxpayer pays before they consider lowering the rate that the super rich pays? No, but as you say how can that be right? Incidentally, there is a strong correlation between affluence and recycling; the more space you have the more likely you are going to recycle - and, evidently of course, the more garden waste you produce. You say "Most who have a garden can compost or burn them at no expense to the tax payer". But they don't - they wanted it collected. If they can compost the Xmas tree, then why can't they compost the grass cuttings, dead heading, weeds etc? Parking and waste collections are two of the most emotive subjects that will get residents wanting to put their penny worth in! If a proposal is not to your liking, don't criticise and ridicule the arguments as "same old tosh". Rather than criticise, come up with some constructive alternatives. |
