| Dear Marc This is a rather complex area of law and there is a lack of precedent - however there is a moral and practical case to be made against the substitution of paid staff for volunteers as there must be a sustained and supported programme to support, train and supervise volunteers properly to ensure quality of service delivery. The risk often comes from the ex-employees who were made redundant, if volunteers are brought in to substitute the ex-employees may make a case at employment tribunal that their roles were not redundant and therefore unfair.
