Actually John, I already do around 12-15 hours of voluntary work each week but don't let that stop you accusing me of standing on my high horse if that makes you happy. :-) When I stood for council (Mandeville Ward, well over twenty years ago , losing by <10 votes) I did so from a position of wanting to serve my local community in some way not claiming allowances to supplement my income. The same I guess applied to my six years as a school governor, twelve years as a Churchwarden, twenty years on a parish council and ten years of helping charities build their on-line presences without any charge or personal benefit. Sorry, this is not an ego massage but simply a counter to clueless keyboard warriors who accuse others of cynicism without any iota of a grasp of the facts. The FACT is that local councillors claim over £1MILLION in allowances, where is the measure of community service in that? Scaling back service is of course something to which we shall have to become accustomed; however we surely have a right to question the motives of a politically driven agenda which cuts vital services while, at the same time, spending capital on unwanted car parks and desk-shortening. I look forward to seeing you behind the desk in your local library sometime soon John. |
