I attended the Northolt leisure library public consultation meeting tonight and as it is being held on the evening before good friday,. there weren't as many there as you would hope. I am sure that Cllr Bell couldn't get another date that would have suited more people, but it was a real pity that only around 35 people attended. That was the third meeting i attended and as with the Hanwell and Northfield meetings, people are really struggling to understand how the new Labour council wants to spend £5m on a car park in southall that they cannot prove the case for, and at the same time close libraries. There is no report and no business plan or traffic study to back up the decision to build a car park, but you can be sure when they close the libraries, there will be a 30 page report with all sorts of statistics in it to make the case for closing the libraries. You can do anything with statistics I'm told. The loan on the new car park will cost the best part of £500,000 per annum and the saving from closing the libraries will be around £430,000 per annum. It is about choices and Labours choices might suit them politically in Southall, but for the rest of us, half full libraries are better than an empty car park in Southall. I ask Cllr Bell again as i did in Hanwell and did again tonight in Northolt, please delay building your car park in Southall until you can prove it is needed and until we can afford it. |
