Lizzie, I should stop digging if I were you. The cost to Ealing council tax payers everytime someone borrows a book from an Ealing library is £5.17. The public has a hard time with that figure when they could go out and buy a brand new paperback for £8 say. It is hard to argue that libraries should be protected from cuts when everything else is feeling the pinch. It is hard to argue that those cuts must mean library closures. There are savings to be made in the back office. There is a case for getting volunteers to help. We can make this add up. The only reason to close libraries is an active choice to inflict pain to make a point. Unless of course you want to grab the land to help fund more new council offices. |
