Lizzie, this is part of the problem. We now have organisations that receive part / all of their funding from the state telling the rest of us what we can and can't do by way of volunteering in our own communities. If people want to volunteer time to keep a library service going that would otherwise disappear, that's their own choice. If you take a trip out of London you'll find that many small villages now have combined shops / libraries that are run by volunteers who receive no reward, other than that of keeping services going in their communities that would have otherwise vanished (or in some cases, had vanished and were brought back through goodwill alone). |
