Ealing council seems to be relying on volunteers to keep libraries viable into the future as the public sector is scaled back. I think this is something we are going to have to get used to. Less state/council provision and a lot more 'doing it for ourselves'. This is in line with what the Government is saying too about the big society and surely is no bad thing? Is Northfields your local library Nigel? If so, if you, as a Northfields? citizen, value your library are you going to do your share by your community and offer some of your free time to volunteer to keep it open? Or are you going to do nothing except stand on your high horse and moan about others who already put a great deal of time into their community? The days of the big state are over. You have to do more for yourself and stop relying on others. And if you don't like the decisions being made then put your money where your mouth is and put yourself forward for being a councillor. Or if you don't want to donate some of your own time why not make a regular hypothecated financial donation to your library? Cynicism never brings any benefits. We need to have big society ethic now and everyone should get involved. 'Practice what you preach!' and 'Every little helps!' and all that! |
