A car owner/user already pays a huge amount to have a car on the road. If you park in your street and not off street you pay a higher insurance premium, If you live in a permit zone - they only exist to deter outsider parking ie commuters and long term parking ie Airport staff or travellers. Streets are paid for to be maintained in council tax paid by all as they service all one way or another. Almost all streets in this borough have road space for parking and through movements going back to Horse drawn vehicles. Problem is oversized vehicles. Now it is perverse that someone with small micro/mini sized car is getting charged more than someone with a huge heavy electric car or indeed a new huge diesel vehicle. When running a vehicle can be over half a years earnings for some, but without it no earnings at all, this constant milking of people with modest and low incomes underlines why a vehicle remains very necessary to make a living for a great many. If you have the choice to save 40% of your income by not having a car fine. But one has to remember that in this society for most that is not an option. |
