| You're right Peter, there are accidents in every walk of life. But the point here is to mitigate against the seriousness of their outcome and/or avoid as many as possible. A difference between 2.5% and 20% in survival and/or serious injury is substantial enough to warrant a change, in my opinion. Likewise the halving of braking distance, which further avoids serious injury or death. If we are concerned about the impact to the economy, then it's worth investing more in transport that moves people around by other means. It already takes a long time to get around London. Driving has always been slow even before the 20mph limits. It is not the fastest mode of travel in an urban area. That is why the average speed in inner London is 12mph, outer London 20mph. This was recorded in 2019. If 5 people were killed and 80 injured each day by other means, and a solution was proposed to cut this considerably, I think anyone in their right mind would think it a good idea. |
