| Come off it Andy, all the major EU referendum campaigners said leaving the EU meant leaving the single market and customs unions. Of course the ballot paper never mentioned it, just like ballot papers never lists parties' manifesto commitments. Ballot papers contain just enough information that people can understand the alternatives they have, the full implications of each option are for debate elsewhere. Irish border was mentioned in the debates and is fairly easy to resolve (ANPR, electronic tagging of goods and pragmatism about small scale evasion as is exercised currently for VAT enforcement) if anyone had the cojones to call the EU's bluff on this. Did you listen to the Today programme this morning? Ex-White House staffer Ben Rhodes said that David Cameron and his aides asked Obama to say the infamous “back of the queue” line. Likely to mislead the British public, no? Every election campaign contain exaggeration, evasion and spin, but only the EU referendum has seen the losing side engage in the mother of all hissy fits to try to deny the reality of a result they don't like. |
