If asked to back up and then wipe the data on an existing machine my best option would be to run a bootable CD or DVD and use the software on that. The original OS would not be relevant. I would just start it running and wait for it to finish. If the hard disc needed to be taken out I would connect it to another machine, possibly via a USB adapter, and use the same software. Very easy. In fact I have friends who repair laptops and use the same DVD or CD to thoroughly test the laptop after repair. The Knoppix disc I would use can be downloaded from the University of Kent website at www.mirrorservice.org, details on my website. If Faith needs help erasing the disc I can show her how or do it for her, but I would assume that she would rather see it being done rather than just hand it to someone she does not know personally. Out of interest, the same system has been used to recover more than 90% of the data from a laptop that had been dropped while in use. The disc had suffered from multiple head bounces across the disc surface. |
