Christopher, of course it is better to re-use things where possible, but you sound like you have the know how, time and interest to do this. Most PC users are simply not interested in loading unsupported, MS alternative operating systems onto their machines, it just needs to work and any faults need to be cleared quickly and without technical jargon. The issue Faith is having is that she is finding it difficult to erase the hard drive and cannot find a company that will do this for an individual. Think about it from a business point of view, if you made your living as a PC Tech (maybe you do), how much all in all would you need to charge an individual to securely wipe a hard drive? How long would it take you? What questions would you need to ask before you even got there? Does it have a CD drive, floppy drive, USB port? What Operating System was used? (This one stumps a lot of people) Has all the data been backed up? Are you or the client disposing of the hardware? If you are, you should be subject to the regulations mentioned previously. Add that lot up in terms of time and expenses and you'll see why its not worth a company offering this service to individuals. Encryption is rarely used in the legitimate world, I've only seen it used by the 2600 boys, all Open Source fans and none of whom could load a CD that worked on a regular Windows machine. But thats another story. G |
