Robin I can't believe that you would say "Of course Julian Bell's promises were dependent upon Gordon Brown winning the general election - how could it be otherwise?" You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard Cllr Bell say that all the promises made in their manifesto were dependant on Gordon Brown winning an election that no one believed he would win. If it is acceptable to go into an election saying this is what we will do if Labour win the general election, he should have also said what he would do if the conservatives won or if there was a coalition government after the election. Cllr Bell is just trying to wriggle Out of the promises he made in order to win an election. As far as the promises David Cameron made before the election, they were based on him winning an outright majority. Bells promises were based on someone else winning a majority. If you want to compare the two, good luck to you. Cameron didn't win a majority and had to negotiate with Clegg. Cameron had to give up some of what he wanted and so did Clegg. If you are disappointed with the outcome, I assume you will campaign to keep first past the post in next years referendum unless you want the result of every election to be a coalition, where the coalition partners drop a lot of what they said they would do. |
