Robin, The difference between the Coalition and Labour deficit reduction programmes is the difference between £80 billion of tightening and £60 billion of tightening. There is no moral difference between these two numbers. It is just a matter of degree. The UK's interest rates, bond yields, etc since the election and the lack of Greek or Irish style crisis for the UK demonstrate that the Coalition has got the degree right too. Getting this judgement call right was the most important task faced by our new government. They got the biggest decision right. History will judge them well. The Tories talked in their manifesto about being guided by the Browne review of university finance set up by the previous government. The Coalition government's proposals are softer than Browne's recommendations with no repayment required until graduates earn more than £21K anhd everyone paying less per month than they currently do. Again Robin you need to explain the moral difference between Labour trebling tuition fees and the Coalition trebling tuition fees. |
