Dear Lizzie Thank you and for the avoidance of doubt I list for you the areas of reimbursement which your website recommends: 1. • travel to and from the place of volunteering. 2. • travel while volunteering. 3. • meals taken while volunteering. 4. • care of dependants, including children, during volunteering. 5. • postage, phone calls, stationery etc. 6. • cost of protective clothing/special equipment etc. Items 1, 2, possibly 5, and 6 are where charities I would expect as a matter of course would pay expenses. So far as 3 and 4 are concerned here is a challenge for you. Please name the top ten charities in the borough which actually pay these expenses in this day and age. They will benefit because they will be more likely to attract volunteers and secondly, as good employers, they can be proud to claim that they are following the recommendations on your website to the letter. I can think of 7 charities all out of the borough, bar one, where lunch is not paid for. Most are national names. In my opinion paying towards lunch is a thing of the past. Also with cuts coming in any left who do pay towards lunch will go. You may have attended that recent meeting at the Council which warned of that stingy meanness which pervades the decision to cut the grants - even though the Coalition would like to see the third sector step in where the state no longer provides. |
