I believe it has been quite clear that the BIG Society means to some extent the functions lost through redundancy will be or should be continued by volunteers. Tories have been banging about the third sector taking on functions for a very long time. I think the present Ealing administration is being forced towards this by virtue of the cuts. Whether Labour or Tory it would happen anyway. What I am most curious about is why the third sector is not being offered increases in their grants so that the Tory Big society has a better chance of succeeding. Bigger grants means that Charity management will be in a stronger position to manage more new volunteers, and promote what they do in order to attract more volunteers. Did I miss something in the CSR? If volunteers are working full time and long hours, then charities should remember that volunteers used to be given an allowance towards their lunch, as well as travel expenses. That should be be reinstated. Charity starts at home. |
