As this forum seems to be dominated by comments about our roads, I thought I would open up an interesting topic for conversation: What, ultimately, do we want our roads to look like? What is the end goal? Each of us may have a different ideal in mind. And this is what I’m interested in. Is it to have traffic perpetually moving, but always free-flowing? Is it a waste to have empty roads? Should we have more roads? Fewer roads? More pedestrianised roads? No pedestrianised roads? For once I’m not talking only about allocation of roadspace, so I’m deliberately avoiding the same old cycling/car/pedestrian debates. I’m simply interested to know how each person on this forum considers the the ideal use the public space we call roads. Not just now, but in the near and far futures. It’s not a trick question. Maybe it’s a bit of a philosophical one? There’s no rush to answer. |
