Given that the number of vehicles will stabilise or even marginally increase over the next ten years according to the RAC Foundation (who actually look at this scenario objectively) then there will be even greater demand on roadspace. There are currently 5.9 million licence holders aged 70 or over in Britain so we know given the poor provision for the older traveller that the demand for mobility is there amongst those of a senior age. This will demand that the roads, now closed to accommodate minorities are reopened if we are not to face gridlock and economic decline. This does not even factor in the 7 million predicted increase in UK population. What is inevitable is that the mix of engines will change from ICE to EV and Hybrid. These vehicles and wider and heavier so there will be even more demand on roadspace. |
