Money like this probably came from government as a grant to improve recycling rates. The Council will probably have had to apply for it and win it and perhaps with a scheme to do so. I agree that knocking on doors improves the recycling rates only the people who came round last time didn't necessarily work in the borough and know all the answers to the questions they were asked. However they did try... but could have done better! They also ordered bins for people who had lost theirs/hadn't got round to ordering more/didn't know how to etc. Rates would have gone up round here if after noticing the number of rotten bags (? number of years and people leaving them outside to rot in the sun - why not roll up when not in use and put in upturned green box? It helps.) some leafleting had been done to get people ordering new bags/boxes. I think someone said on this forum that they had been told to recycle their tatty bag in their new one - is this right? Unfortunately this last initiative wouldn't have worked with me because I don't put all our recycling out each week. We've reduced our waste so considerably that we only put our plastics out when the bag is full. This reduces the likelihood of losing it(which we have recently). The same with the green box. We generally put the food waste bin out weekly. It can go fortnightly with no problem but we would be unhappy if we had a fortnightly collection and had to go a month! I believe any major initiative increases rates. The really low rate boroughs in London hadn't had any communication from their Councils for years. Populations move and change. I'm more interested in the reduction of residual waste. I would like to see those households who do not recycle called on - we can all see who the worst offenders are - so that they are given help to get started if they are unable to do this themselves or with the help of neighbours. (Why not offer help to a newly moved in neighbour. Why not SHARE your bags/bins until they get theirs or you help them to get them?) Follow the bin lorry and you will see who has all those black bags out which the cans roll out of and the bottles clank in. Feel ashamed! |
