Hi Colm Without claiming to sh?t stir you are very keen to hear from others if they think this recycling initiative is a load of cobbswallop or just a load of sh?te! Well, Colm - what do you think I think? Of course, it is a gimmick! It is so unfair too. There is plenty of evidence to show that there is a clear correlation between affluence and recycling. The more space you have to live in the easier one is going to find it to recycle without rubbish being in the way. So houses that are divided into flats will have lower recycling rates than houses which consists of just one household. People will only recycle if they find it easy to. Accepting this you can see how easy it is for Hobbayne to do so well without even trying. What I think is more unfair is that the poorer parts of the borough need far more investment put into their local communities than somewhere like Elthorne, Hobbayne or Southfield wards which have done so well out of this scheme. The twenty grand that Hobbayne will be getting should - if anything - be spent on keeping Hanwell libary open. If the Council are really keen to encourage eco-living and get people to rethink the decisions on how they run their lives and what they buy then they should seriously be considering charging residents 50% more for their second residents parking permit. I dare the Council to find love by introducing this idea. Or even better, refuse residents parking permits if they own a 4x4! Sadly, because of attitudes like Moira who describes people as "eco - nutters" you can see clearly why the project was conceived in the first place. |
