Figures are sourced from 'Ground Force' by Anna Minton, published earlier this year.(ISBN; 978-0-141-03391-4) I cannot condone the behaviour of Tony's squatters. The people who did this damage are/were clearly mentally ill/deranged. The incident is more about their 'illnesss'/'derangement' than about housing per se. I also cannot condone Mrs Thatchers's 'wrecking' of the UK housing scene by stopping building Council Homes and destroying the 100s of Housing Society schemes which allowed 'renters' to share in the increasing value of 'their' property. I also can't condone Blair and Brown for allowing private landlords to develop such power and wealth in housing the poor and homeless - and for it to cost tax payers a fortune in a completely unregulated market. I also can't condone these two for only building a handfull of new Council Homes over the last 12 years. Also these two allowed Housing Associations, whose origins are in the charity and volunteer sector, to become in effect very powerful, unaccountable private developers with £billions in reserves and fat cat salaried CEOs at their helms. So, Mr Moore, what I'm saying is that squatting is just one aspect of a housing mess that sucessive Tory Governments (Real Tory and New Labour Tory) have lead this country into. And given that we get the Governments that we deserve it's the fault of all of us to have let this happen. |
