That's quite correct. But the chances of water being pulled back as far as the main are almost zero as the feeds are lower than normal pressure.

The simple solution would be to fit a non return valve on the tap, cheap as chip and done in a jiffy. They are fitted to all my properties that have a garden and also serves as a preventative against frozen outdoor pipes/taps.

It would be a problem if hoses were continuously connected but they are not.

There are just a few hundred allotment holders maybe a couple of thousand borough wide but there are several hundred thousand homes with gardens, most of which will have a garden hose and very few have non return valves on hose pipes. Houses are generally much nearer a service main. But no action being taken there.

So why the old sign at the Ascot allotment?
