In November and early December 2024 Ealing Council ran a public consultation of extending the CPZ hours in 9 CPZ areas from 2 hours to 10 hours. The justifications for asking the question were 'short times are difficult to enforce' and in these areas there is 'significant parking pressure'. No evidence is presented to demonstrate that 1,000s of CPZ licence payers had requested this consultation. The inability to enforce argument is a very weak one. It's clearly impossible to enforce the 20mph speed limit on 100s of Ealing roads. Should this then justify removing the speed limit on these roads? On a more serious point, driving to and dropping in the see how an elderly/sick/disabled/vulnerable relative or friend is coping is quite easy when there are just 2 hours/day to avoid. For 10 hours/day this will be very difficult or impossible. ONS tells us there are 32,628 residents over 70 years of age in Ealing. Many of them do not own a car, smartphone or personal computer - so they will be unable to generate digital parking permits for visitors. And what about traders -eg plumbers, electricians and handymen - and carers visiting the old/disabled/ sick/poor/vulnerable? It's now 114 days since the public consultation ended. What and where are the results of that consultation Councillor Driscoll? |
