I’m not sure who you think is ‘trying to own everything’. A lot of people just like to have new things, particularly at Christmas. What you will find, Philippa, is that manufacturers usually build in obsolescence to their products so that people will continue to buy the latest thing. This is particularly true of mobile phones, where older models that might be perfectly serviceable with new batteries are no longer able to be upgraded. As for other electronic and electrical items, you really need to know get you are doing or run the risk of destroying them permanently or, worse, causing damage to yourself or your home. I wonder how many people really have the time or inclination to repair things themselves, particularly in more affluent areas. |
