Simon, once again you are demonstrating that you are ill-equipped to handle grown up debate. Mark makes some persuasive arguments but, unlike Mike who responds with some well-informed and powerful counterpoints, you come back with a mixture of peevish insults, inaccurate statements and internally contradictory arguments delivered in a spluttering rage. I am not going to view the closure of a golf course with anything other than regret and the council is probably seriously undervaluing the social capital of these clubs and the way they provide a support network to people who might otherwise be vulnerable. On the other hand the argument that we may be missing out on a future generation of Ryder Cup winners by closing municipal courses doesn't appear to be a strong one. I'm sure there will be some but I can't think of one leading British golfer who seriously developed their game on a public course. In the States the only examples I am aware of are Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson. I also find it hard to dispute the argument that in an increasingly densely populated part of London, open space that is available to all has an increased value to the point where a public course can't be justified in Perivale. That's desperately unfortunate for the members but generations of local residents will benefit from the new park. |
