Municipal Golf course are what makes Golf affordable and accessible for many, just like swimming pools, tennis courts, bowling greens and running tracks. They are a leisure amenity. It involves walking, being out in almost all weathers, learning to play a game and the self control & discipline it can induce. And can be played at any age in any combination. All things that are being highlighted as missing in the lives of so many in society. Anyone can use a municipal golf club. But like most other one time amenity full public access sports and outdoor pursuits they have become private ventures and inaccessible and unaffordable to a great many, far too many. Golf Links house a vast range of wildlife. Due to the ettiquette, large areas are bereft of dogs and rough areas and trees protected. The removal of the 2 9 hole pitch and putt courses in Gunnersbury Park saw the loss of several species of Bird, then a couple events trampled down the ground and foraging dogs and contact walking over the area has all but destroyed its wildlife. So replace that with Hiking ( on a strip of land ? ) or walking or cycling and drinking coffee? All of those are not particularly fully accessible to all and pretty boring. Especially once it becomes familiar. The image the Latte sipping elite are creating is almost Zombie like with people just wandering around looking for their next Decaff Flat White. |
