Maggie,
Firstly, Eric misquoted.  The cost of the dance studio in the Ealing Arts Centre business plan was just over £100,000.  Without our voluntary input, goodness knows how much extra it will cost the Council to build it. But in any case the money is not coming out of the Council budget.
Secondly, Arts are very much part of everyone's life: Do you watch films, wear clothes designed by people, use kitchen ware designed by designers, enjoy prints of paintings in your home and, especially, listen to music, read books and watch TV? All products of artists!
Thirdly, if in your view the Arts are not practised widely enough so that you think they are a minority pass-time, then let's have an arts centre for the people and bring the kids in off the street, replace the threatened facilities for the disabled and give a active welcome to retired people who may want to build new friendships and activities locally.
Fourthly, over the past decade the Creative Arts have been the fastest growing part of the London economy, helping to create jobs and bring some happiness to millions of people's lives.
Maggie, you should be aware of all these points before you rush to ill-informed decisions.  Over 2,200 residents have already shown their understanding on our petition.
