| George i am not a member of the Ealing council pension scheme, so I won't be getting a pension from it. Councillors have only recently(in the last 4-6years I believe) been allowed to join it, but they have to pay the full cost of membership, whereas employees pay some and the employer, the council taxpayer, pays the rest. So the deficit of £350m+ is the council taxpayers to pay. As a self employed person whose income is not what it was a few years ago, I had to stop paying into my personal pension plan. Through my council tax, i am paying more into the pensions of council workers pension pots than my own right now. I don't think that is fair. The staff should of course have a pension, but the unions should be willing to recognise that it is no longer fair that public sector workers have these gauranteed schemes which we pay for, while a lot of us don't have a pension of our own. That's where the Labour party should be ashamed of themselves. They should have reformed these in 2003 and stood up to the unions who bullied them into protecting the pension benefits that their members enjoyed. If they had stood up to them, then the deficit in Ealing would be a good deal lower than it is today. that is the cost of the unions for you |
